You can now browse the web safely by limiting the amount of information you expose to the sites you visit.
Public proxy servers are a good thing, for three very different reasons.
- Proxies balance network traffic handling traffic spikes effectively. If everyone were using the proxy server of their choice, then instead of 1 million direct connections, IBM would have to handle one thousand connections, and one thousand proxy servers would serve a thousand customers each, and everyone would be happy
- Proxies provide access to websites that are unneccessarily blocked. Corporate IT staffs attempt to manage employees web surfing and they do block many sites that should be blocked. In other cases, they may be blocking sites such as web mail sites, legitimet downloads sites, that may provide information that aid employee productivity.
- Every Internet browser is equipt to use them. The technology to provide them is already ubiquitous, because a proxy server is effectively the same thing as a firewall which is to keep the bad guys out which is good thing. So the same technology that keeps the bad guys out of your network can also keep the other bad guys from keeping the good guys in?
